Liz
Cowley was born in Sheffield, England, she graduated
from Birmingham University, and she trained as
a teacher in London. She came to Montevideo with
her husband and children almost thirty years ago,
and now lives close to the centre of Montevideo,
just off the Rambla, the coastal road which runs
the length of the city. Over the years, she has
come to know and love Montevideo and its history,
and enjoys showing it off to visitors to Uruguay.
Liz was awarded an MBE by HM Queen Elizabeth in
2005 in recognition of her services to the community
in Montevideo.
Liz’s husband, Richard, also graduated from
Birmingham University, and then followed up with
an MA in Latin American Studies. He taught in
England for several years, and then moved to Montevideo
where he was Director General of the Anglo-Uruguayan
Cultural Institute for 25 years, and President
of the British Society in Uruguay for 4 periods.
He has lectured widely about South America on
cruise ships and elsewhere, and he has a particular
interest in the events and personalities involved
the Battle of the River Plate. He was awarded
an OBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2004. |
